Meet the teachers

Yesterday was meet the teachers.  We started off at my oldest’s school, since it was closer.   We met the homeroom teacher, left some of the larger school supplies in the class room so that it wouldn’t be so crazy carrying things to class on the first day.   School starts for middle school at 7:30am, which was the same as last year, school let’s out at 2:30pm, which is earlier than last year, but we were also on a 4 day school week last year.   I really liked the 4 day school week, because then I could do piano lessons and any Doctor appointment’s on Monday’s.

We then went to my middle and youngest kids school.  We met the middle’s three teachers and again left the larger supplies.  We then went and met the youngest’s teachers, my youngest was very excited as she got the same teacher’s one of her sister’s had.  We were allowed to leave all supplies in that class room, so that is one less thing to forget that morning.  School starts at 8:35am for them and get’s out at 3:30pm.

Working Out On The Wii Fit Plus

1

Posted by kat | Posted in Family Happenings | Posted on 29-09-2011

About two months ago, I asked my husband to fix our Wii.  Our Wii was broken, when our youngest stuck another disk in there while there was still in it.  We ordered a new disk drive off of Amazon. and my husband got it working.   For my birthday a few years ago, when the Wii first came out they had Wii Fit, this was the only thing I asked for, my in laws and my husband went in together and bought it for me.  Of course like most stuff in our house it was lost by the kids.  I went to the local Gamestop and was able to find the Wii Fit Plus discounted because it was used,  I bought it and I started working out.

The WiiFit Plus asked me all sort of basic questions, I stepped on the board and it gave me my weight.  I was around 140lbs, to some this may not sound like that much, but I am only 5 ft 3 inches tall and while I carry the weight well, I was starting to notice that my clothes were feeling a little tight, and I was having troubles running up the driveway.  Granted  my driveway starts off flat then goes to somewhat steep slope, before leveling out again.   I decided that I would try and work out for an hour every day.  I worked out for two hours yesterday and found it was a little much to fit into my day, what with everything else I have going on.  It was nice to see that yesterday I was able to burn over 6oo calories.  In exploring a little more of the Wii Fit Plus, it also lets you catalog your other activities, yesterday I logged that it took me 45 mins to cook dinner, I did 30 mins of cleaning the kitchen and another hour of washing, folding and putting away laundry to make up those 600 calories.    Today I did an hour of cleaning, another hour of laundry, I worked out for 72 mins.  I am sure your asking HOW could I have burned so much more today than yesterday.  Today, because I am still trying to work out what types of workout I want to do, I only did Aerobic type workouts on the Wii.  They put Aerobics as being worth 5 MET’s, so by doing the 5 met ones and doing the longest it would let me, I was burning more calories, than by doing the lower met workout for longer.     This is what I have sort of decided to do, I am going to alternate doing aerobics one day and then doing the yoga and strength training the next day, I will most likely try and do an hour to an hour and half work out on the Wii Fit Plus and then try and keep track of my daily chores to log as well.  So far in the few short days of doing the Wii Fit Plus, I went from 140 to 136 lbs.  I feel like a have a little bit more energy, that I sleep a little better and that I feel a little bit healthier too.

My goal weight is to stay between 125 and 130lbs, we will see how well I manage this.

OK!!!! So I am really not that old and I am really not to bad looking ( Just feel that way at time)
Something I have always wanted to do was learn a musical instrument, I never really got the chance as a kid, as we were always too busy with the horses.  Several years ago, my kids wanted to take piano, they started out with a friend of mine, they loved her style of teaching and we were sad on several different levels when her husband got transferred and they moved to New Mexico.   I then had to find another piano teacher, and was able to find another great piano teacher.     I made the mistake( Ok so it wasn’t as big of a mistake as it sounds) of telling this wonderful piano teacher that I have always wanted to learn to play the piano, just so I can play for myself and stuff.   I already knew the note names, I had learned that FACE is for the spaces and EGBDF(Every Good Boy Does Fine) is for the lines on the top hand.  The bottom had has ACEG (All Cars Eat Gas) for the spaces and GBDFA( Great Big Dogs Fight Animals) for the lines.  Before I started I could pick out the top hand, but adding bottom and top hand would always cause me to mess up.  I had two songs that I knew the notes to, but couldn’t play them very well, it was either way to fast or way to slow.  Not to mention it being very choppy sounding.  I was finally able to get up the courage to start, and while I have gotten better( so the piano teacher says)  I can almost play 3 songs well enough that I might let someone other than my husband and kids hear me play.  The three songs are Come Follow Me, Sweet Hour Of Prayer, Silent Night.   I go back and forth between being able to play and totally messing up on four more. Those three are God Be With You Till We Meet Again, How Great Thou Art, That Easter Morn and There Is Beauty All Around.  Recently I had to admit that I was still having a huge issue with counting the beats of the songs.  I totally do not get the difference between why a 4/4 time and 3/4 time has to have different counts for the whole notes, the half notes and the eighth notes.   The sweet very patient piano teacher says it’s easy math, HERE is the first problem.  I totally sucked at anything beyond basic math, I flunked algebra twice, the third time I barely got a passing grade and it hasn’t gotten any easier as I got older.  Guess what I get to work on for the next few lessons???  Yep!!!! Figuring out how to make the notes and their counts make sense to my non mathematical brain.

We recently went to Florida to see the last of the current space shuttle launches.  It’s the last because they are not sending any more missions to the moon.  They are working on sending people to mars, and from what I read and have heard, they are sending things to the private sector.  I am not sure what is really going on, as you can never really trust what you read or hear.

We left Fort Valley, on July 6th at 9am.  We packed plenty of snacks and activities for the kids.  It was decided that we would stop every two hours, this was to stretch and let the kids out to run around.   We stopped at the Georgia/ Flordia border, where there is a visitor’s center that gives out either Grapefruit or Orange Juice as free samples.  We also decided to stop for lunch at this time, other than the kids not wanting to eat, because they wanted to run around, it was a rather uneventful first two hours of the trip.   The also had these cute cut outs that I took the kids pictures at.  Nana and Papa, even decide that they needed pictures taken.

We then continued on our way, the 6 hours trip took us 8 hours. We arrived in Daytona Beach and got settled into the hotel.  We took the kids swimming at the pool and we also played in the ocean a little.  We decided that we wanted to get up and see the sunrise on the beach.  We set our alarms for 6am and herald in the new day with a walk on the beach, little did we know what we were in for.  My mother and husband had been to Daytona Beach before, and it was decided to take the kids to the boardwalk and pier.   I  really do not think that they remembered how far it was from the hotel.  It ended up being 3.5 miles away from the hotel.  The walk to the pier was not bad at all,  we walked along collecting seashells, and other interesting items.  They found a few pieces of sand dollar, a few crab shells and several seashells which were put in to zip-locks we had brought along.  We also found a live crab, several jelly fish and even a baby fish.  Later we left the kids with Nana and Papa and Hubby and I, went and found the few Elongated machines that were listed.  We added about 6 new pennies to our collection.

They next day we checkout, we packed the night before so that we could get an early start.  We drove an hour to where the launch site was supposed to be.  We didn’t get to go to the space center, as it was closed for the visiting dignitary’s.  I was sort of bummed because they have 44 different penny images there.   We decided since traffic was crazy and there was a park near where we were, that we would just sit at the park and watch the launch.   There was a bad storm scheduled to hit around the time of the launch, hubby found an app on his phone for NASA Radio, so we listened to it for a while and they mentioned that at T-Minus 9 they were going to hold the launch from anywhere from 9- 45 mins, so they could double check the weather.  We were about 5 miles from the launch site and even with the clouds being low, it was still cool to see the glint of the shuttle as the sun hit it.  It took about 2 mins, before we heard the sound of the shuttle, because it moves so fast.  We ate a picnic lunch, while we waited for the traffic to thin enough that it wasn’t a mad house.  We then started on our way home, which is when we hit trouble.  We had a slight shimmy in the car, and figured that somehow we had lost the weight bar that balances the car tires, the further we drove the worse the shimmy got.  I then thought maybe we were low on air, so we stopped at the only gas station that had a working air compressor, paid the $1.00 to get air which only lasted long enough to fill two tires, paid another $1.00 to fill the other two tires.  The shimmy was alot less, it was around 5pm, so we decided to stop for dinner.  We then proceeded on the rest of our journey, about 3 hours from home the shimmy came back and had a loud noise with it, so we pulled off at a weigh station, thinking we had a flat tire.   The tire did not end up being flat, it had a wave it it, which meant that it was out of round.  We put the spare on, which by the way is the spare that comes with the car and says not to go over 50 mph.  Most spares are also on an aluminum rim, and are not meant for long term use.  We tried to find a Walmart that was open, but they were all closed by this time, it was roughly around 8pm and we were supposed to have been home already.   We finally made it home at 11:45pm. I called the tire shop first thing in the morning and they said to bring the tire and the receipt in and they would look at it.  They looked at the tire and said that the radial belt(metal) had separated from the wall of the tire.  They replaced it free of charge, I then asked them where I got get a rim to use as a spare, so I could get rid of the doughnut spare.  They sent me to a salvage yard that was about a mile down the road, they are only open Mon-Fri.  I sat in their parking lot and called my parents, to see if they know of any place to go, that might be open on a Saturday.   They were able to find me a place, and while it was a bit of a drive to get there, they had a rim and it even had a decent tire on it.  I was thrilled that it was only going to cost me $35.00, I really wish that I had taken the time to find a replacement rim sooner.
