Well! I had friends stop by; and the kids were telling them about the baby chicks and wanted to show them one, so I pulled out one of the chicks and they were like OH! that’s a hen.   So I took the rest of them out and they showed me how to tell what they are, usually I have to wait until they are 6-12 weeks old.  I am so excited as I ended up with 6 hens and 1 rooster, that is not bad seeing as you a have a 50-50 chance of having mostly roosters or mostly hens.  I think with a little more pracitce that I’ll be able to tell a lot sooner now then I used to be able to.   I can always sell the extra roosters when I get them or I can keep them and get rid of the older roosters.

Cold, Cold Go Away, come again another day

It has been bitterly cold here lately; we have gotten down as low as 15 degrees, and as high as freezing here at night.   I am thrilled; that is not supposed to get below freezing next week, I might actually get to plant my garden.  I got some peas in before it got really cold; and I won’t know if they have survived, until they actually start popping up through the ground, I sure hope they survived.   I did stop at the feed store to see if they have seeds in yet and they did not; won’t have any in until next week at the earliest, I really needed more pea seeds as I am out and only got a row and half planted, the kids go crazy over the peas as I usually buy the edible pod sugar snap peas.   I need to till a few areas of the garden; before I plant some of the seeds and what not I am hoping to try and till maybe Monday,  as it is supposed to be fairly warm.   I love having a small tiller; for Mother’s Day I was given a Mantis Tiller, and I love it and it has made things so much easier.

Brooder’s, Chick’s and Rooster’s

I was hoping that I could convince Buddy the midget; to behave and be nice to Red the giant, but of course boy’s will be boy’s.   I finally after chasing Buddy around when he started chasing red; I got tried and yesterday built him his own smaller coop, which after chasing him into the larger coop and cornering him I caught him.  I then had to do chase Goldie;  so that he wouldn’t be lonely and sit there and crow all the time, they seem happy and all settled.    The chicks I had to bring inside; due to a cold snap we had, and I didn’t want them to get sick.   They finally got so rowdy and started to smell a little; even though I was cleaning the huge box( thank you hubby for the computer box) I had them in everyday, but having seven chicks in it does explain a lot.   So on top of building Buddy a new home I worked on enlarging the brooder;  I finished it just in time to put the chicks in, as the two older chicks were almost able to jump out of the box.   I then put all the chicks in the brooder and made sure they were all settled; made sure they had food and water, and watched them wander around the brooder for a while.     The two older chicks are about 5 weeks old and I should be able to tell; if they are hens or roosters soon, I think I have one of each but I am never sure until they are all feathered out.  Hen’s tend to be smaller then the roosters; and the roosters tend to be larger quicker and more husky looking than the hens, but depending on the breed sometimes it takes longer than 6 weeks to know if you have hens or roosters, or at least it does for me.

I love doing geneology, there is something about finding where your family started and why they moved around.  I have been doing geneology off and on since I was 14 years old, I  have gone back as far as the 1700’s for some of my family.   Most of my family came from Germany or some of the other countries that speak a slavic launguage.

Just added pages for my genealogy; will be adding more as I get all the names sorted.
