I love reading mystery books, but recently I found two writer’s that I really enjoy reading, as it combines my two favorite things, cooking and reading.    My first writer that has included recipies in the books is Diane Mott Davidson, she wrote Dark Torte and included the recipe, then  a friend gave me a book to read called Carrot Cake Murder, it is written by Joanne Fluke, and she also includes the recipe’s of several food items mentioned in the book.  Today I plan on trying to make the Viking cookies and maybe the carrot cake that is listed in the Carrot Cake Murder book.

Yesterday, was a good day for eggs.  I received two eggs from my duck’s and I also received 9 eggs from the chickens.    I use the duck eggs for cooking cookies, cakes and stuff, and for eating I use the chicken eggs, as my family doesn’t seem to like the strong egg taste the duck’s seem to have.  The two duck egg’s I have are from my Pekin ducks and I am hoping that the Mallard’s( they lay a green egg, Pekin’s lay a white egg)  will be close behind or if they are already laying that I can soon find where they have been laying.

Fall is in the air

Fall is in the air, this morning it was 50 degrees when I woke up this morning, and I actually needed a sweater or sweatshirt, the high today is supposed to be in the low 70’s.  The trees still have green leaves on them, but the leaves are slowly changing color’s.  Some of the trees have yellow, orange and red leaves, and you can smell the hint of colder weather in the air.  I had a nice cup of hot coco and realized that I didn’t have any apple cider packet’s and or apple juice to turn into cider.  I took stock of what I need to get done for the animal’s, before winter really set’s in here.  The fence needs to be put up, at least around the small area I have cleared, and then I can let the goat’s graze all the time, instead of having to try and keep them in a small area that I had fenced.   The coop, for the chickens needs to be redone, as does the goat house and that needs to have straw put down in it for them.  I only got at far as figuring out supplies for the coop and what I wanted it to look like, every time I think I have a moment to work on it, something else needs  my attention more.  When the first frost hit’s, I’ll be digging up sweet potatoes, which this was my first real year to plant and they went crazy.  I be burning off the weeds in the garden, and my compost pile needs to be burned down as that is where I was putting all the burnable paper’s.   I will be planning what to plant as soon as January 15th hits, and if all goes well hopefully planning on buying some baby chicks, so that I have enough chickens to post a sign that I have egg’s and I will be able to keep up with demands.

Flowerbeds project

Yesterday, I took a look at my front flowerbeds and shuddered.  They were very over grown and our poor gardenia, that I planted just after our oldest was born, was trying to compete with the weeds.  I keep meaning to plant things in the beds, and I have had them cleaned out several times.   I would love to move my herb’s to a front flower bed and or make them their own bed.  I really do need to get them off my back porch, they are taking up way to much room.  So now that it is getting cooler, I am going to try and work on getting the weeds out of the beds and some wood chips down and plant’s in the beds.  I still need to finish putting together my strawberry beds, so that I can plant the new strawberries when I order them.
